Emerald Ash Borer Damage.

Like the rest of the state my parents got on the ash tree planting bandwagon when they moved around 2000. They tried to treat the trees, but they started to decline anyway and they gave up. I helped cut most of them down ~2015, and they've been happily regrowing from the roots since then. So far so good, the bug population is wayyyy down.

They had one tree survive and the bark has begun to scale off, revealing the extent of the damage:
