Lucas,

A nearly 7’ girth is very impressive for a Jack Pine; the 73’ height is above average, but not unusual in good growing conditions. According to American Forests’ listing of the tree, it scores a total of 165 points. For comparison, the highest-scoring Jack Pine I’ve measured is a 162-pointer in the Adirondacks (measurements and methods submitted to the Cadre, but not officially to American Forests). Close to that tree is another that will score about 150 points. Several in Lake Placid should make about 140.

If the height and crown spread figures are accurate, congratulations to Homkes and Gable. The story doesn’t mention any coring being done on the tree; I wonder just how old it is?
