Went on a mini road trip with my friend two days ago to see the largest tree in Minnesota, at least it was when we last had a register. It is really a beautiful tree!

Some multi-trunk trees seem like cheaters, and then there are trees like this...

Yeah, cool tree and very impressive but still... these multi-trunkers need their own listing. Lee Frelich has larger trees I'm sure- by volume of single stem.

Eastern Cottonwood I presume? Impressive tree for what it is. As long as the individual trunks are still big trees in their own right I'm impressed. Just a different kind of impressed. Nice tree.

I have yet to find a tree I do not like but if I did a book about trees this one would be in it. Sam

All,

Cottonwood is king of the big trees for the northern latitudes from the Dakotas eastward. My son has done quite a bit of research in upstate New York and the species was more valuable in the 1700s and 1800s than I ever would have believed.

Yes, trees such as this one reinforce the need for two lists: single-stem and multi-stem.

I would agree, single stem is more impressive. Still, I feel a little better about this one since it branches above that 4.5 ft mark. For measuring sake, it doesn't seem right to me when I see a big number measured and find out it was measured at 2.5 feet because that is where the trunks split.

The tree "branches" well below 4.5 feet- in fact at the ground level. As the individual stems grow in diameter the fusion "pushes" up above ground and in this case, perhaps 4.5 feet.

It's in Lac Que Parle State Park. There is a viewing area for the river on the East side of the river up 140th Ave. NW. It is due east of that viewing area and a little bit south by a little over a quarter of a mile. Not that hard to find because it sticks up over the canopy.
