I'm just trying to figure this new board out,  I haven't given trees much thought recently, its time to spice up this Minnesota Board up a bit.

Jimmy,
Like James said that is a good way to start!  I haven't found any trees close to that size around here.

Jimmy,

Great tree. It joins the list as one of the really big cottonwoods. There is one that size, actually slightly larger, in Plattsburgh, NY. What is the latitude of the MN tree? Yours may be the farthest north of the  cottonwoods in the 25-foot girth and over class.

Bob,

The Lilydale cottonwood, pictured above, is at 44- 54'58.25" N, 93- 07'35.28"W (Google Earth)

There is another cottonwood nearby on Harriet Island that is 26.04' circumference 44- 56'07.61"N, 93-05'07.61"W (Google Earth)

I think Jimmy has posted a picture of the Harriet Island tree before.

Pierce, Jimmy, et al.,

I am increasingly impressed by what the cottonwood can do at relatively high latitudes. It grows very fast and takes full advantage of long summer days. It may well be the largest eastern tree species at 44 degrees north latitude and higher.

I found a big cottonwood today.  I'll measure it more precisely later when I get a rangefinder and a rope, but some of my high school students and I touched fingertip to fingertip around it and it was four of us plus about 2 to 3 feet more.  May be 22 to 24 feet around.  This was my first day of hunting for big trees and it seems like a honker. Fun!

Well, I measured what I thought was a big cottonwood...only 21 feet circumference at breast height and 87 feet tall.  Decent but nothing outstanding.
