NTS- A co-worker from New Hampshire was telling me last week of a couple a places I would find interesting this is one called the Desert of Maine. The thing that caught my attention was he told me some of the trees were buried in the sand and still growing with only the tops exposed fascinating.  http://archive.boston.com/travel/explor ... _freeport/   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_of_Maine   Larry

Larry,

I haven't been to the "Desert of Maine", but my understanding is that it's a good example of what overgrazing by sheep, and other poor farming practices, can do to a piece of land. The topsoil that once covered underlying glacial sands was quickly eroded away, resulting in the desert effect.
