Greensburg's Famous Tower Tree (IN)

Post by Matt Markworth » Mon Sep 02, 2013 8:09 pm

Hi All,

I'm not usually a fan of roadside attractions, but here's a slice of Americana that couldn't be resisted.

I searched the old site and I'm not the first NTSer to see it . . .

Good grief, Is that a mulberry?

I can't fathom how a tree that big can find enough space to root into, without their being massive water damage to the building.

Rand,

I agree, it does look like Mulberry. Here are some closeups of the leaves and bark.

Also, it appears there are some interesting things going on up there. In the last photo you can see what appears to be a hose and maybe foam of some sort to possibly seal the building. They have a tree city festival, so I wouldn't be surprised (and don't blame them) if they were "helping" the tree.

It isn't by any chance actually potted? What state is Greensburg in?

Joe,

I doubt that it's potted as they occasionally have to remove other trees that have sprouted and the town has allowed certain trees to remain over time. It's in SE Indiana.

According to the link from the link you provided, it is a Mulberry and trees having been growing there since the 1870s! I think I have driven through Greensburg once, but I don't recall seeing that!
