Dwarf Cypress Grove

Carole and I ventured into Tate's Hell State Forest to see the Dwarf Cypress Grove where we also encountered vast swarms of biting Yellow flies and Cottonmouth water moccasins.

Hi James- Two of the four reasons I don't do must posting on Deep Southern Forests in the Summer. The others are high temperture and humidity. I went to Tates Hell back in 2007 when I was visiting Florida every weekend for 3 years. The trees were small but up to 300 years old. Something in the soil there stunts the growth of the Pond Cypress that grow throughout the Forest. http://www.nativetreesociety.org/fieldt ... s_hell.htm Larry

I first heard of the grove when a fellow kayaker at our campground told us about them. He'd gone kayaking in a creek there and had the insect bites to prove it. He also saw a lot of moccasins and at one point on the kayak trip he had to prod an alligator out of the way to proceed down a narrow portion of the creek!
