Introducing - Redonkulous

Post by M.W.Taylor » Tue Oct 13, 2020 9:49 pm

Found a giant sugar pine with Duncan Kennedy today in the Sierra Nevada.
name: Redonkulous
height:267.0 ft
uphill diameter: 8.59 ft
dbh (using photogrammetry):10.34 ft
basal perimeter: 11.45 ft

Going by uphill tape wrap alone, this tree qualifies as co-champion sugar pine. The diameter at the 4.5 ft level can not be measured directly unless one had a giant caliper over 10' wide (Bill Price of Oregon built one). The dbh of this tree was measured by Duncan Kennedy using photogrammetry technique from a viewpoint on the downhill side of the trunk.

Estimated Volume: 5,383 cubic feet. A near equal to the current champion and the Black Fox Sugar Pine.

Genuinely one of the largest trees I've seen in a long time. I look forward to our future expeditions.

Michael, Duncan,

Great find. I’m glad to see you guys out there in the thick of it, still coming up with undiscovered giants. Hopefully I’ll make it out there soon.
