AJ-
Along with Juniperus occidentalus, my backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas exposed me to the five needle pines, usually not far from tree line, generally where life was best!  One summer, my work took me across the spine of the Sierra Nevadas on four separate primitive roadways (120, 108, 4, and 88). These had in earlier years been access points for backpack trailheads (John Muir/Pacific Crest trails).  Hard to miss the five needle pines/western junipers at each of the high passes. An example from Ebbetts Pass (8732’) along Hiway 4 follows:

Here are what I believe to be female and male western juniper pair within several hundred yards of the pass…probably 250-350 years old.

Well, those trees display a rather elegantly aged grace, don't they?

Quick typo correction...it's Ebbetts Pass. Lovely curvy steep climbing and narrow road!
