#1)  The Tallest Trees in Africa

Postby KoutaR » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:20 pm

The Tallest Tree in Africa is a 79-meter (259 ft) tape-measured Eucalyptus regnans. A still taller tree, 81.5-meter (267 ft) Eucalyptus saligna measured by a land surveyor, existed till 2006. The both trees are/were located in South Africa.

Hi there, in Jan 2013 we measured a euc regnans in South Africa and it measured 81.6m- the findings are on the explore post i believe. I also think this made it the tallest planted tree in the world..

If that other tree mentioned in post #2 / South Africa is still standing, then it would still be Africa's tallest tree if it didn't lose height of 81.6m. If it grew, then even taller yet.

That may mean the tree you posted about is the 2nd or 3rd tallest tree?

Yes, that's true, Mario.

"DBTree", if you are reading this, could you post the details of your 81.6-meter tree? How was it measured? Is the tree still standing? A link to a measuring report or news article?

Hi Kotua,

DBTree is probably Drew Bristow, a NZ aborist and tree climber.  He is part of a group who have documented expiditions in Africa - see http://www.explore-trees.com/#intro

There are a few reports on the tree, e.g. http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/world/afr ... gh-enough/

The tree(s) are also listed in the official list of SA champion trees:  http://www.nda.agric.za/doaDev/sideMenu ... 202013.pdf

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks Matt,

Your links say the tree is E. saligna and 81.5m, DBTree says it was E. regnans and 81.6m. If the champion tree list is right there are/were three trees with the exactly same height: the Kilimanjaro tree, the E. saligna tree measured in 2013 and the fallen one!

Looks a bit cryptic...
