World Rucker

Post by bbeduhn » Tue Dec 22, 2020 12:25 pm

This list has been nine months in the making. Many thanks to those who have provided measurements. In particular, the NTS website and Monumental Trees, have provided the most numbers for most of the continents.

Kouta Rasanen has been instrumental in Europe as well as in Asia. Also in Europe, Jeroen Philippona, Karlheinz, Rainer Lippert, Marc Meyer, Wim Brinkerink, Owen Johnson, Teijo Nikkonen, Esko Oksa, Jukka Lehtonen, Dean Nicolle, DBZT, and the Giant Trees Foundation have been instrumental in measuring.

Brett Mifsud, Tom Greenwood and their team in Australia have provided most of the measurements from Down Under, along with Aaron Poole and Matt Fooman. Giant Trees Foundation has down work down under as well as Robert Van Pelt.

Robert Van Pelt has provided measurements throughout the West Coast of the US, as well as in several other countries. Michael Taylor continues to find record breakers in California along with Chris Atkins and Duncan Kennedy. Steve Sillett has worked in Redwoods for decades. John Harvey spends many days in redwood groves now. Mario Vaden photographs and searches out new records. Zane Moore finds the other species lurking beneath the redwoods.

In the Eastern US, Will Blozan and Jess Riddle have tallied dozens upon dozens of records over the last three decades. Michael Davie, Josh Kelly, and myself have also trudged around the Southern Appalachians. In the deep south, Larry Tucei, Tyler Phillips, Don Bragg, Eli Dickerson, and Jess Riddle are searching for new champions. In the midwest, Matt Markworth, Steve Galehouse, Rand Brown, and Doug Bidlack have found numerous records. In West Virginia, Turner Sharp found perhaps the finest jump in height for any tall US tree, with the tallest by a mile, yellow buckeye, in addition to his world travels, most involving tree measurement. The mid Atlantic states are represented by George Feio, still finding exceptional sites, Darian Copiz and Dale Lutheridge. Colby Rucker also measured here and he now bears the name of the Rucker Index. In New York, Erik Danielson and Elijah Whitcomb are covering the Adirondacks, amongst other sites. In Massachesetts, Bob Leverett and Jared Lockwood are recording serious growth numberson their favorite sites.

In Asia, Roman Dial discovered many champs in Malaysia. Kouta Rasanen and N. Kaandorp have added more champions as well. Independent groups of botanists have climbed local giants and recorded their finds.

This list represents hundreds of dedicated individuals and teams, both professionally and in amateur scientific pursuits of finding the tallest, thickest, and oldest trees on earth.

Cool list! A few notes:

The tallest Eucalyptus regnans is now 100.5 m.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-12/new-milestone-for-australias-tallest-tree-centurion/10604588
http://www.ents-bbs.org/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=8564

The 99.8-meter Abies procera was not laser-measured -> probably not entirely reliable.

88.3-meter Shorea in Tawau Hills Park was Shorea faguetiana, too - not S. gibbosa. Though I doubt if all the tallest trees really are S. faguetiana. Maybe they are identified only to the species group, yellow meranti, that includes dozens of species.

There was (is?) a 86-meter Eucalyptus obliqua. It was mentioned on http://www.gianttrees.com.au/ but that site does not exist anymore.

I only checked the tallest trees down to 85 m.

Brian,

We all owe you! You're giving meaning to our collective efforts. We thank you!

I had been planning to name a tree in the MTSF ENTS Grove for you, and will for the next 150-footer that I confirm there. In the interim, you are getting another tree. It grows about 0.4 miles from our house. It was named after the two beavers living near by. Their names? Why Bucky and Beatrice, of course. What else? However, in the fall, they chewed down a gorgeous young yellow birch growing a few yards from their pine, a birch that I was fond of. Consequently, have fallen out of favor. In fact, they're on the schedule to become beaver hats. So, the white pine (see the attachment) is no longer the Bucky and Beatrice Pine, but the Brian Beduhn Pine.

Let it be said, let it Beduhn on this 24th day of December in the year 2020 of our Lord. Oh yes, your pine is right on 133 feet in height and 11.05 feet in circumference.

Happy Holidays,

Bob

Kouta,
Thanks for checking over the list. I'll make those updates but I'll hold off on adjusting the Rucker indices for a while. I don't think I finished checking NTS for Australia, so I missed the Centurion posts. The Shoreas are certainly confusing. Can Pelt measured the A. procera. I assumed it was a tape drop. If you have evidence that it wasn't a tape drop, I'll move on to the next A. procera.

Bob,
I'm willing to share the tree with Bucky and Beatrice. It appears to be a solid strobus. Thanks!

Brian,

Bucky and Beatrice are happy to share the pine with you. They ask you to intercede on their behalf and ask Bob not to turn them into beaver hats for gnawing down one of his favorite yellow birches.

Brian,

I am not sure but I thought the A. procera was a tan measurement. One reference I found: Van Pelt's book "Forest Giants of the Pacific Coast" says: "A beautiful grew near Harmony Falls, northeast of the mountain, before being destroyed by the 1980 eruption. This grove contaidend an individual that was measured as having a height of 325 feet. Although not a laser-based measurement, this is the tallest known specimen of any Abies ever recorded..."

"Although not a laser-based measurement" could be understood so that the method was inferior to the laser/sine method.

Why not to ask Van Pelt directly!
