Richard Feynman Quote

Post by edfrank » Mon Aug 20, 2012 7:46 pm

Richard Phillips Feynman (May 11, 1918 – February 15, 1988) was an American theoretical physicist known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, and the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as in particle physics (he proposed the parton model). For his contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman, jointly with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965.

quote is from the book "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" (1988)
"I love science and it pains me to think that so many are terrified of the subject or feel that choosing science means you cannot also choose compassion, or the arts, or be awe by nature. Science is not meant to cure us of mystery, but to reinvent and revigorate it." by Robert M. Sapolsky

I've always appreciated the beauty of a inked black and white rendition of a flower or plant, as used to illustrate it's basic parts...in addition to the aesthetic qualities, I SO agree with Feynman that there is beauty in the individual parts, and the processes they may embody.
I doubt that any scientist would find fault with an artist in their appreciation of a plant's/flower's aesthetics.
Perhaps a good example of a synergy between art and science would be the rare 1800's large book of American birds by Audubon...
