On February 3, in fact, were presented by Prof. Assergi Piermaria Corona, University of Tuscia, illuminating the preliminary results of the study, carried out in collaboration with the Board, "Identification, mapping, structural characterization and planning of old growth forests of the Park. " Coinciding with the International Year of Forests, proclaimed by the UN in 2011, and in the wake of the important conference held last June in Prati di Tivo, the continuous commitment of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga for knowledge, the preservation and promotion of valuable forest ecosystem.
Absence of direct human disturbance for a long time, the presence of large trees, dead trees, standing and ground, trees and habitats, abundant deadwood: these are useful to select the field in the forests identified as obsolescent. The study of the University of Viterbo has identified three old growth forests in the park. They are small flaps included in beech Source Novello (13 ha) and dell'Aschiero (3 ha), both located in the town of Pietracamela, and Frassineto Valle Vaccaro, in the town of Croghan. If the first note reaffirm their value in national, the Frassineto Valle Vaccaro proves a real rarity in forest type, of which there are very few examples in Italy.
The value of these forests is in addition to the extraordinary reality of many other forest park of age who have certain characteristics, such as beech Martese (Rocca Santa Maria), of San Cerbone (Acquasanta Terme), Source of Bettina (Fano Adriano ) Pietralunga (Castle) and in those of Colle della Pietra, and Pianello Tignoso in the town of Croghan.
An illuminating study, therefore, the one just concluded, the preliminary results, announced Prof. Corona, will be published in scientific journals. The study was greeted with a positive attitude and enthusiasm by the park, which is being prepared in accordance with local, program management, conservation and promotion for scientific, educational and tourism but also, for these fascinating and valuable ecosystems, goods from protect but also to know and appreciate.
