Nelson is on the north coast of the south island of New Zealand, on Tasman Bay.

Not much of a root system. Wouldn't be surprised if the tree was next to landscape or lawn that gets irrigated. Irrigated trees often root too shallow. Some of the sturdier tree around here are the ones that go all summer with no irrigation.

Probably not irrigated, as Nelson gets around 1000 mm (36 inches) on average each year, distributed evenly throughout the year. Great region for horticulture.

That particular storm was the tail end of Cyclone Ita.

I think it's always foolish to have big trees close to a house! I presume arborists warn people about this.

I've heard that heavy rain can saturate and weaken the soil so much that ordinarily sound trees can blow over. Perhaps that was a contributing factor here?
