New Height Record Umbrella Magnolia

Post by bbeduhn » Mon May 11, 2020 7:47 am

In the Clarks Creek area of Cherokee National Forest, two tall umbrella magnolias (Magnolia tripetela) were discovered. On Devil Fork, a 76' umbrella mag was discovered, right next to the trail. I didn't have tape with me but I estimate the diameter at about 17", or 53" cbh, right at the record forest grown girth. On Sill Branch, an 89' umbrella mag resides about 30 yards to the right of the trail. Its diameter is slightly smaller, perhaps 15".

I've been informed of an 80+' tripetela in Fiery Gizzard, also in Tennessee.
