Wofford College is a small, liberal arts college in downtown Spartanburg, SC. The entire campus is an arboretum. The school was founded in 1854. There may be a few trees from that period as some fairly large, slow growing oaks inhabit the campus. Most of the trees, however, have been planted since 1992, when the school planned on having the campus as an arboretum. One tree, in particular, stands out. It is a hybrid of white oak and post oak. The top broke off years ago but the branches are reaching upward and the tree is the tallest on record, just beating the Q. x fernowii at Clemson. I believe this tree is a natural hybrid. Most hybrids at arboretums are propagated.
