All,

A couple people expressed interest in utilizing LiDAR when I was at the National Cadre event in PA, so I have typed up a step-by-step process for PA.


1)        Download/Install Fusion: http://forsys.cfr.washington.edu/fusion/fusionlatest.html
a.        Scroll down and download the 7.0 Mb file

2)        Get TIF, LAS, and DEM files from this site: http://www.pamap.dcnr.state.pa.us/pamap/data_source.aspx
a.        Zoom in on the map and tiles will appear, zoom further to see tile names
b.        Click “Tiles in View”
c.        Click “Get Tiles in current view”
d.        Click “TIF” for desired tile, a big zip file will download
e.        Open zip file and extract all files
f.        Back on the website, click “LAS” for the same tile, a file will download
g.        Open zip file and extract the file
h.        Back on the website, click “DEM” for the same tile, a file will download
i.        Open zip file and extract all files

3)        Convert PAN_dem file into .grd file using this site: http://converter.mygeodata.eu/
a.        In the upper left, click “Choose File”
b.        Select the “PAN_dem” file that was extracted (should be in the range of 30 Mb – 40Mb), don’t choose the .aux file or the .rrd file
c.        Back on the website, click “Submit” in the upper left
d.        Scroll down and select “Arc/Info ASCII Grid (.grd)” in the dropdown for the “Target raster format”
e.        Click “Convert Now!”
f.        Click “Download result”, which will download a zip file
g.        Open the zip file and Extract all files

4)        Use Fusion to convert .grd file to .dtm file
a.        Open Fusion
b.        Click “Tools”, “Terrain Model”, “Import ESRI ASCII raster file”
c.        Change “Files of Type” to “All Files”
d.        Select the PAN_dem Gradient GRD File (50 Mb – 175 Mb), click “Open”, click “Import”, click “Close” after it successfully converts

5)        Use Fusion to view LiDAR data
a.        Click “Image”, select the big TIFF file
b.        Click “Raw data”, select the LAS file, click OK, put a checkmark next to “Raw data”
c.        Click “Bare earth”, select the .dtm file, click OK
d.        Right click on the image to zoom in, shift right click to zoom out
e.        Highlight a small area by dragging with a left click, the LiDAR Data Viewer will appear
f.        Use mouse wheel to zoom in and out, hold left click to turn
g.        Red dots are the tallest hits, and a scale shows on the left
h.        Close LiDAR Data Viewer and through zooming in further on the Fusion image and using the LiDAR Data Viewer you can isolate a tall hit
i.        When you have isolated a tall hit, jot down or take a screen shot of the X,Y coordinates in the lower left hand corner of Fusion
j.        Go ahead and save a Fusion Project file (.dvz) by clicking “File”, “Save As”, and name the file
k.        As an additional note, right click in the LiDAR Data Viewer for lots of options

6)        Convert X,Y coordinates into GPS coordinates using this site: http://www.earthpoint.us/stateplane.aspx
a.        Select  “US Survey Feet” on the right
b.        Select “Pennsylvania North” or “Pennsylvania South” in the dropdown, depending on the location of the tile you selected
c.        Type in the X and Y values
d.        Click “Calc”

One of the hardest things to do is create an idiot-proof manual!  Your step by step process looks easy enough, if I can find the time before Durango, I'll volunteer to see if it's idiot-proof...; > |
