In September 2021 Dr. Stephen Sillett and I bushwhacked into a well protected old growth forest in Siuslaw National Forest. The tallest we found here was 99.5m, a douglas fir that was growing on a bench. We located a nearby tree (also a douglas fir) that was 95.6m tall. Also on a bench. Elsewhere in the grove are at least a dozen trees over 92m. It appears we stumbled into one of Oregon's tallest forests, if not the tallest. The next day I re-measured Brummitt Fir using Trupulse200x, tripod and prism pole survey. I last measured Brummitt's height in 2011 at 99.7m. This time I got 99.3m. The tree has lost a little, but not much. Much more of the top is now dead and very exposed. On nearby BLM lands we found a giant douglas fir that stands 98.8m and is over 10 feet in diameter. This tree has a vigorous live top. The tallest known redwood of Oregon stands 98.1m to a dead top. The 99.5m, the 98.8m and the 95.6m trees all have vigorous live tops.

Mike,
Congrats for the findings! I am amazed at those trees! Is it alright if I post a photo or the info onto monumentaltrees.com?
Thanks for sharing!

Michael,
Awesome Finds! I had no idea coast redwood had topped 98m in Oregon. The Doug firs continue to amaze.

Hi Michael-
Wow! Congratulations to you and Dr. Sillett for the great finds.
You continue to have amazing discoveries.
When looking at the Forest on Google Maps I can see where a great
deal of Siuslaw have vast cuttings. Reminds me of our Southern Forests except Oregon trees
are much larger. Imagine what has been cut out over the last century.
