Lake Superior Provincial Park

Post by AccipiterGentilis » Thu Sep 10, 2020 6:48 pm

For those that haven't been, Lake Superior Provincial Park is pretty amazing place ! At its heart it combines the rugged qualities of out west in a super small package. The roads are blasted through rock and the views are spectacular. The Lake itself has many gorgeous views either from the road or hiking trails. The hiking trails are all relatively easy and most are not too long.

I found this amazing white pine while driving through the beautiful forests. It's about as far north as white pines grow. The species does not make it to the north end of the park which is fairly close to Wawa. I measured this white pine at 45.4 inches in diameter and 125' tall.
It has a gnarly and unkempt appearance that attracted me immediately. It shows its age visually and you have to wonder how many November gales it survived while holding that position. It's long been one of my favorite white pines.

The tree was on the west side of the road and visible directly from the main highway 17 route. I believe it is before the highway breaks away towards the interior of the park. I'd be very curious to see how the old monarch is doing.

There are also a lot of beautiful little rivers and streams that carve through the mountains here. It truly is a beautiful place and compares with virtually no other places I have been; its very distinct in its footprint.

This pic has a peregrine falcon that perched in a dying crown of a white pine in Pancake Bay to the south.
