Historial photo by Albert Roth of American chestnut.

Much is made of the vast size of the American chestnut tree. So much so that most of the stuff I read about them is, to say the least, inaccurate. But I did stumble upon this photo by Albert "Dutch" Roth. Over 28 feet in circumference!

Huh, that's really surprising to see. The ACF is using a different photo of what appears to be the same tree in their magazine:

The caption reads, "Photo courtesy of the Herbert M. Webster Photography collection, university of Tennessee Libraries" Does your photo have any better information about it's location?

At any rate, it's quite a beauty.

Rand-
Of course, I like it that there was a person and reference object in the tree photo...any idea of the dimension of the stick they're holding in the first photo?

JRS, Randy, Don- Here is another nice one not sure if it's the same tree. This photo use to be on the ACF cover page. I would estimate this tree 25'+ above the butress. Larry

It's really striking how few photos of big chestnuts there really are. Seems like the same handful keep popping up over and over again. Or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough...

Ok, haven't seen that one. Though, the log looks debarked. I assume the ID was from an annotation?

Rand
While I hate to see such big trees reduced to logs, I'm glad that they at least were respected enough to have been photographed...
Re debarking, I'd guess that is a function of being pulled by large team of oxen across logs (probably a species that is slippery when wet) laid across the road to diminish friction.
Re annotation, not sure of ID, might wanna look at the URL for documentation...

I didn't see any notations on where Roth took the photo, but most of his photos have details as to where and when they were taken. I'll double-check.

There's also this tree, which I've pointed to before...
