Freedom Park, Charlotte

Post by pattyjenkins1 » Thu Apr 10, 2014 3:11 pm

Have any of you ever looked closely at the trees in Freedom Park? There’s a sweetgum very close to the right side of the path that goes up the west side of the park from the south. It’s not too far from first massive willow oak on the pond. It has the weirdest bark patterns I’ve ever seen. Large swollen areas starting about 20 feet up the trunk and then continuing a good way up, with patterned ridges. Nobody I spoke with at the Charlotte Arborists Association Tree Climbing Competition could tell me what was going on with it. Sorry I didn't get pictures.
Any ideas, anyone?

Never noticed it. Well, I probably have, but never paid it much attention.
