I got the chance to measure some more redwoods on the way back from Greensboro. When I figure out my new iphone, I'll get pics posted. A few are from Asheville.

Brian- is the tallest Dawn Redwood you've found the 126.4 footer in the Biltmore Grove #1? I've found a 120 footer in Atlanta (Fernbank Forest) and am wondering how it stacks up. It's a fascinating species of tree.

Eli,
Some current highs that I have are as follows:

124.1' highest at the WNC Arboretum

126.4' Biltmore grove past ticket center

126'+ Biltmore-the big one in the garden. I hit 126 and change last time but was a little close up due to bushy undergrowth. I hit 130.1' but I had a clickover issue on my laser which added 1-1.5 yards on the shot, likely 3' on the actual measurement. I plan to remeasure from the spot I got the 130.1' but the true height is from 126' to possibly 130'.

128.6' Biltmore Village, behind TGIFriday's, near the entrance to the Biltmore Estate.

I also have several 120'+ in Biltmore Forest that may have had significant growth since they were last measured two years ago.

120's are quite unusual. The only 130's I know of in the US are at William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and possibly one in Princeton, NJ.

Has the dawn redwood ever been found to "escape"?

Joe,
It has colonized near trees on several occasions. Will told me that it dotted the hillside with saplings by the 128.6' in Biltmore Village. They've since been eradicated as part of a construction project. I noticed it reproducing in my new neighborhood and I was told of it growing from cuttings at a local school at their compost pile. I don't have any info on it starting to become naturalized. If it does naturalize, it does so in a painfully slow manner. There's certainly no threat of invasiveness.
There is a site in NC where a guy is trying to reintroduce it, along with some other conifers, growing it in many different habitats. He's considered a bit misguided by some.

Brian, I think it would be great if it did naturalize- though this seldom happens with trees. Given the fact we've been losing tree species for a century, I can see nothing wrong with with this species joining our flora.

The biggest one I've seen in Ohio, grows just downhill from an old spring house in Dawes Arboretum. It has a massive taper going from ~5' dia at ground level to ~ 2' dia at 10' in the air. Unfortunately its top blew out in a storm ~ 10 years ago, reducing it's height by almost half and it hasn't really responded with much height growth since then, but the lower bole continues to expand rapidly in diameter. It grows by itself in the middle of a mowed lawn, so I guess it senses no urgency.
