Living hemlocks in the Smokies??!!

Post by jamesrobertsmith » Mon Sep 10, 2012 10:32 pm

Two of my backpacking pals went on a two-day backpack into the Great Smokies this past week. I had to miss the trip because of my injury. Andy posted photos of the hike. I was especially interested to see that his photos of the Hyatt Ridge Trail show living hemlocks. Now, I know that a few groves in the Park have been treated and there are living trees there, but I wouldn't have thought this was a high priority location. Every other place I've hiked in the Park in recent years show no living hemlocks at all. Has Hyatt Ridge been treated for hwa?

JRS,

It is highly likely the site is a conservation area. Have them look for paint marks on the non-visible side of the tree. All treated trees are marked near the base.
