Pigeon River?

Post by jamesrobertsmith » Sun Feb 26, 2012 11:27 am

What's the current state of water pollution in the Pigeon River below the pulp mill in Canton? When I was a teenager on a two-week backpacking trip in the Smokies I hiked across the bridge into Big Creek and the stench of that river had me quite literally puking before I could get away from the river and up the road toward the Big Creek ranger station. Last time I drove across it--two years ago--the river looked much cleaner, but I've heard that it's still pretty polluted. Is it still pretty bad? (At least it wasn't foaming black and brown suds as it was when I was a kid.)

James: Boaters still refer to the river as the "Dirty Bird". I was there about ten years ago and it deserved the name.
