Southern catalpa and Norway spruce, Sylva, NC

Post by Will Blozan » Fri Oct 29, 2010 9:29 pm

ENTS,

Just a quickish post on a job I did yesterday with a "near champion" tree. Balsam Mountian Preserve, a private "green" community contracted my company to install lightening protection in their locally famous southern catalpa. Long touted as the biggest in the state (not a chance by a LONG shot) they nevertheless wanted to protect it. It is a really cool tree and grows at a brisk 3,600 feet in the middle of a golf course. I last saw the tree in 2002 when it was in second-growth forest.

I went ahead and measured it:

DBH 36.9"
Height 80.1'
Long spread 73.5'
Average spread 65.5'

On the way out I measured some Norway spruce in the same grove above where James Parton reported a few months back. Two nice ones caught my eye:
23.9" X 128.4' Norway spruce
23.9" X 128.4' Norway spruce
23.9" X 128.4'
17.6" X 127.5'

Will,

I measured a couple of Catalpa trees at Green Hills Cemetery a couple of years ago that was nearly this size.

I am glad you got to follow up on those Sylva Norways. I am glad they are some still there. I remember a lot of them being clearcut when I passed through. The tallest one I measured was just above 125 feet, if I remember right. 128.4 is pretty dang good!
