Cole’s Woods, Warren County

Post by ElijahW » Tue Jun 09, 2020 7:04 am

NTS,

This spring I surveyed this delightful tract of forest on the north side of the city of Glens Falls, NY. From what I’ve gathered on the internet, Cole’s Woods is primarily a cross country skiing spot, complete with lighted and groomed trails. When the snow is gone, the trails are opened to people on foot and bicycles, I believe. Trails are maintained by a volunteer organization called “Friends of Cole’s Woods.”

Glens Falls is located south and east of the Adirondack Park boundary, but it’s proximity to the mountains shows in the species I encountered at Cole’s Woods. It’s a great mix of a southern dry ecosystem and a cold northern swamp ecosystem.

Here’s what I found:

Eastern White Pine Pinus strobus

135.3‘
133.7‘

Pitch Pine Pinus rigida

99.5’

Red Pine Pinus resinosa

93.3’

Eastern Hemlock Tsuga canadensis

102.5’ x 7.14’

Tamarack Larix laricina

62.1’

White Oak Quercus alba

116.2’ 8.27’
107.7’

Red Maple Acer rubrum

108.7’

Black Birch Betula lenta

71.7’ x 4.50’

Striped Maple Acer pensylvanicum

42.0’

Rucker 9 Height Index: 92.4’

Ground cover and wildflowers seen:

Maple leaf viburnum
Blue cohosh
Wild sarsaparilla
Purple trillium
Canada mayflower
Star flower
Partridge Berry
