New Jersey state champion Tulip Tree

I have been wanting to search out the state champion Tulip Tree for along time. Last Wednesday, I finally got the chance. My son and I went to Freehold to see some old churches and big trees. The Tulip Tree is in a wooded area in Freehold.  In spite of there being a lot of trees in the area, when you see it , you know it. The tree is huge. It is exactly what you would want to see in a champion tree. The tree is healthy, has lost hardly any branches, has a big spread to it, has some height to it and the trunk is huge. It is one of the most impressive Tulip Trees that I have seen. If anybody is in that area, go search it out. You will not be disappointed. There are a lot of Tulip Trees in the Freehold area, but none quite like the champion.

Great tree! I'm surprised that the NY champion tuliptree would exceed the NJ champion tuliptree. Is there a larger one out there that's simply not on the list?

Erik, I have seen quite a few Tulip Trees in New Jersey. If there is a bigger one than the state champion, I don't know about it. Would you be able to tell me exactly where the New York champion Tulip Tree is? I am always on the lookout for big Tulip Trees.

Tom, you may actually find the NY state champion tuliptree quite conveniently located- it's on Staten Island, which in some respects belongs more to NJ than it does to NY. It's very accessible in Clove Lakes Park. If you ever swing over there let me know, I live on the island and would be happy to give you that park's unofficial big tree tour.

Erik, I would like that. Maybe sometime this summer I will head up that way. I will let you know if I am going to do that. What would be the best way to let you know?

Tom, you can reach me via personal email at er1kksen@gmail.com or use the private message system here on the boards. In about a week I'll no longer be a resident of the island, on the road between different research sites in the NY metro region (I actually may be interested in asking you about sites you may know of in NJ that would be appropriate to include in our project), but visiting Staten Island will definitely be something I do fairly often in that capacity.
