Virginia Pine and Shortleaf Pine

Post by Barry Caselli » Sun Mar 14, 2010 8:19 am

ENTS,
Last Monday, the 8th, I got out of the farm early, and took a ride just a couple miles to the north to photograph trees (no measuring or anything). In fact I didn't even get out of my truck. In that area, the Virginia and Shortleaf Pines outnumber the Pitch Pines, so I wanted some pictures. I love Pitch Pines and Shortleaf Pines, and the Virginia Pines look a lot different, but I like them too. The pictures are here:

Jenny has already seen the album, but I don't know how many members are on Facebook. So check it out. I do a lot of photographic trips when I can. The exact location is mentioned in the description of the photo album.

Barry,

Even if you don't have a laser or clinometer carry a good tape to measure the girth of trees you find. I am very interested in the cbh of Pitch Pines in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Of course don't leave your camera behind.

Barry-

Nice photos. Virginia pine very much resembles jack pine both on form and foliage--jack pines are native farther north in eastern NA. Jack pine photo attached.

Sorry, I just saw this. This must have been transferred from the Google group. I have not yet become very active here. As for your question, as of now. I don't remember. It was probably cool, being in early March as it was.
