Re: What most impresses you?

Joe, I agree with all the characteristics you mentioned and I think it comes down to a sense of whether the overall integrity of the site has remained relatively intact. The ultimate expression of this would be old-growth, but I think it can definitely include relatively mature stands as well. It's ...

Re: What most impresses you?

Ray, Great question! Not much catches the attention and captures the imagination quite like a gnarly, old crown. The patterns are interesting in their own right, and beyond the initial wow factor it's fun to imagine what events led to all the twists and turns. This painting from the Kano school come...

Re: LiDAR search of Oregon's old growth reveals tallest pine

Michael,

Wow, awesome trees and awesome point cloud analysis/images.

Any idea if the old-growth fragments have any official protections? This kind of evidence should justify a high conservation value if not already protected.

Re: Seeking a Feature Article

Erik, Yep, that sounds like an awesome article idea. It can be short or any length (because we all know life can be hectic and time is limited, and also shorter articles are more likely to be read all the way through), a description of a hike, tree measurements, etc. Searching for a candidate forest...

Warren County, OH - Searching for Old-Growth Characteristics

NTS, I'm going to be keeping an eye out for a possible candidate to the Old-Growth Forest Network in the county where I live: Warren County, Ohio. I've included some photos below from Hall's Creek Nature Preserve, and as I look in some additional places I'll post the photos to this thread. Hall's Cr...

(Vermont) Public meeting-5/8: Blackgum Swamp Protections

NTS, This article might interest some ENTS, as the blackgum seems to be one of the species that many of us hold in a very high regard (not that all species aren't great, but of course some are easier to gravitate towards than others.) I think it's because of the great age potential, the ability to s...

Re: Seeking a Feature Article

NTS, With the recent good news about Crown Hill North Woods in Indianapolis, I have put Crown Hill "In the Spotlight" on my forestreporter.com website, in the same space that I had the "Featured Article" showing. I'm still interested in the article idea that I mentioned in my last post though if any...

Re: Crown Hill North Woods

Great News! We're going to have to still keep an eye on the forest though, you never know what can happen years from now. Several years ago the forest was almost sold for a development, and recently it was actually sold to the VA, but now the VA and the cemetery have done a land swap so the forest i...

Seeking a Feature Article

NTS, I'm currently seeking a feature article to display on the home page over on the forestreporter.com website. The one I have there right now is from November and is becoming dated. The main thing that I'm looking for is an article that has as a topic one of the publicly accessible forests that is...

Re: Biodiversity and Old-Growth Live Streaming Event - 5/1/1

Ray,

Great to hear!

Looks like it's fully up and running if anyone wants to join in as well. Looks like based on their website they also post the recording for those that want to view it later.
