Re: Where is NTS Going

And what topics were hit, even who's topics were hit, perhaps to find what the 'great unwatched' like to hit on...?

Re: Carbon Science and the Climate

Bob- I'm sure there are folks in NTS that might be eager to volunteer for such a cause, but haven't had any more exposure to the whole carbon sequestration thing, than I have. Perhaps you could put together a simple quick primer that might get us 'over the hump' conceptually? I think there are a num...

Re: New Member

Bryce- A hearty welcome from the western NTS group (WNTS) ! While I'm a decade out of the field (retired in 2007), among other hats, I was involved in re-establishing native plants (from a contracted nursery using our collected seeds) at Grand Canyon National Park...at the time, I was grappling with...

Re: New Eel River LiDAR reveals more 350' class redwoods

Although I am drawing on experiences gained in the mid-90's, while working on the Church National Forest doing timber sale traverses, we found the right balance of accuracy and expediency with a Criterion 300 (a yellow brick of a laser hypsometer). The feature that enabled us to get work done fast a...

I will be accompanying my better half next spring/summer as she travels to Iceland (5 months) on a Fulbright grant...we've explored the West Half, do you have recommendations for the East half?

Bob-
Sounds like one fine instrument, and if it isn't 'user vicious', it'll be a fine addition to your 'stable'. How about an image of it and it's stand/tripod arrangement?

Re: Mounting the Vortex Solo RT on an Impulse200LR

Michael- I too saw a synergy in combining a reticled monocular with a laser hypsometer for modeling tree volumes. My solution doesn't have the simultaneous mounting that makes for consistent parallax factor that yours does. I chose to do them sequentially, that is to say mount the monocular to one q...

Re: Crown crowding...

Gaines- Between us we have many years in the woods, huh? I agree with your observations, particularly with those from the Western US. I was willing to consider that there might be something to the quality of light getting to the needles (portions of the electromagnetic spectrum...ultraviolets, infra...

Crown crowding...

As a stand develops, say from a disturbance that cleared the area, there comes a stage where the crowns compete for light and attain crown closure. Almost. Looking up from underneath such a stand, one can often see 'corridors of sky' around the crowns. Screen Shot 2018-08-27 at 1.38.11 PM.png This i...

Re: Opportunities for NTS

Bob
With only one sample on the Bushnell, it's hard to know if they're all going to be 1020 + or -, so your spreadsheet set up is a good idea. Same probably goes for the Vortex Solo too, although it's gradations aren't as precise as the Bushnell's ?
