Re: Washington Grove City Park, NY

When I was at Washington Grove today I saw this sad sight. photo 1-3.JPG photo 2-3.JPG Apparently the rot visible at the base of this towering black oak was enough to scare city officials into having it cut down (see video below): http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20130821/NEWS01/308210056...

Re: Washington Grove City Park, NY

I stopped by Washington Grove a bit before sundown and captured this panorama. Tomorrow I'll be back with a few hours to spare for measuring.

Re: Washington Grove City Park, NY

I'm in Rochester this week for business and plan to visit Washington Grove on Saturday. I'll take some pictures and remeasure some of the trees with my Nikon 440. Are there any specific remeasure requests? I did email Larry Champoux who lives nearby and I hope to hear back from him before Saturday. ...

Re: Laser/Clinometer Comparisons

Don Bragg, et al. published a paper in 2011 (http://www.nativetreesociety.org/specialreports/bragg/Bragg2011D.pdf) wherein they measured 42 trees with a TruPulse 200 and compared the height to that obtained by tape drop from the top. Re: Laser/Clinometer Comparisons

I have the ipad clinometer app and although I think it has a lot of potential in its latest version, I can not for the life of me figure out how to calibrate it. That's the main reason I haven't used it for measuring. A second reason that I doubt it's accuracy is my concern that the angle could be o...

Great work documenting the trees in this park, Mark. I bet it was fun to find the "new" 154 footer.

That was fun. I knew about 1/2 of them at first glance. There was something like this that was going around on Facebook last year.

Toys R Us disses Mother Nature, NWF presents a rebuttal

First Toys R Us came out with a TV commercial showing how exciting their toy store is by contrasting it with a canned, "boring" field trip to the forest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5SXybm6bss Then the National Wildlife Foundation posted this video rebuttal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVNJSv...
