Re: Ramseys Draft Wilderness, VA

NTS, I went back to Ramseys Draft the other day and treated the old ash tree, along with a handful of smaller ash trees, with a dose of imidacloprid in preparation for emerald ash borer. Although EAB has been trapped in three adjacent counties, I don’t think EAB has reached the draft yet, at least t...

Re: Help with Maryland Tree Id's

Mark, I definitely can relate. I worked as a tech in redwood national park for years and then moved back to the east; its a pretty brutal contrast. But what the PNW lacks (besides small inland patches of conifer heterogeneity), is diversity. As you know, once a redwood dominates, it DOMINATES. Nothi...

Re: Ramseys Draft Wilderness, VA

Thanks for the confirmation on the ash. That really is a special tree. Matt, it seems like a good place for some measuring, although there is a lot of coarse woody debris and just be prepared for some rough terrain. The largest pine I saw I estimated at maybe around 150ft, but I'm sure there are tal...

Ramseys Draft Wilderness, VA

NTS, A couple of weeks ago I made a tangent trip to Ramseys Draft wilderness. The Forest Service has managed the Ramsey’s Draft area essentially as a wilderness since 1935 and much of it has never been logged. This is one of the few places in Virginia where you can find old growth low elevation fore...

Re: Wood burns

Erik, Very nice burnings man. I really love that pendant. Even the multiple holes you put to thread the twine through. You can tell you have put a lot of thought into these pieces. I came across this artist the other day, you might be interested, http://www.minisapyrography.com/ , she is RIDICULOUS.

Re: Wood burns

Thanks Erik, I first sand down the wood really fine and then I sketch the object with pencil. Afterwards I burn an outline and then shade it in. I use to use one of those pens you mentioned so I feel your pain. If your interested in investing, nibsburner (nibsburner.com) makes models around 100 buck...

Wood burns

Hello ents,
Attached are some recent wood burnings of mine. I hope everyone can appreciate them here as most of them have to do with trees.

Re: Great Bear Rainforest agreement creates 'a gift to the w

I agree with Joe for the most part, good forestry is a beautiful thing. Wood is one of our greatest resources and should utilized, and in terms of carbon sequestration and land use is FAR better than concrete or steel. Mining is by far the worst degrader of the environment. I consider myself an envi...

Virginia longleaf conservation

An interesting article on longleaf restoration sites in Virginia. http://ww2.odu.edu/~lmusselm/blackwater/longleaf-pine-restoration-d2-1.pdf Very cool project and I hope funding for these projects continue.
