Re: Mobile Phone Mod for BBS

Hey Ed,

I replied on my Droid3 and it looks good here, but I'm not sure that it is much different from the normal web page. It is scaled properly to the smaller screen though and everything seems to work fine, too.

Laser beam viewing aid

If you have ever wondered about the size and shape of your rangefinder laser beam, or whether or not it is aligned with the aiming point, there is a tool that will allow you to check out the laser beam and it's alignment. Purchase an infrared sensor card for use at home. Possible sources include the...

Re: Partitioning Diversity

As a follow up to this post, a research program activity has been scheduled to discuss my brother's papers. Unfortunately, it is out of reach of most of us in the Americas since it is being held at the Center for Mathematical Research in Barcelona, Spain next year. Grants are available for lodging a...

Re: Pagami Creek Fire, Minnesota

Lee, Well, at least the smoke provided enhanced beauty in our sunsets, even if my eyes were itchier and my sinuses a little irritated. The following page shows MODIS satellite images of the burn scar: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8909 110926_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_mn_anim.gif Al...

Re: Pagami Creek Fire, Minnesota

Sorry that I didn't reply sooner. This darn fire made for hazy days and smoggy sunsets as far as where I live and work near the border of Wisconsin and Illinois near Lake Michigan. Even the smell of smoke made it here and it was a topic of local television news stories in Milwaukee and Chicago in or...

Re: New map reveals the most biodiverse place on Earth

Ed, Well, I guess that my brother, Lou, picked the right place to live. He lives at the west edge of the green region on the map just west of the center of the red region. He has entered the Yasuni region alone a few times. He found it to be a dangerous place and was captured by Shuar headhunters. N...

Study Attempts to Predict Max Tree Height Across U.S.

I don't know if this has been posted to the ENTS BBS yet, if it has, I missed it and apologize for the duplication. MIT, U. of Maryland, and the Santa Fe Institute recently published the following study that attempts to predict maximum tree heights across the country based upon USFS FIA data, weathe...

Nikon RifleHunter 1000

Has anyone tried the Nikon RifleHunter 1000 rangefinder? It supposedly measures in 0.1 yard increments and costs about $350. I'm not sure if the high resolution will translate into high accuracy....

Re: Partitioning Diversity

Don,

Thanks...

Joe,

Based upon previous discussions, I believe that Lou is against clearcutting except to remove invasive species or planted industrial forests.

Droid Smart Measure App

For those of you with Droid smart phones, you might want to try the free Smart Measure app. I don't have one but played with it during lunch on my coworker's phone. I haven't tried it outdoors, but it might work on urban trees in the open for rough measuring when your laser and clinometer has been l...
