Re: Hemlocks and Adelgids

Hey Will, I would guess 120,000 individuals that average 12" diameter. This number is a very rough estimate. I also looked at 75 years of inventory data (we retake it every 10 years at set locales) I have thrown a tape around 1200 to try and get an average DBH. I hope that clears up any confusi...

Re: Hemlocks and Adelgids

Our hemlocks are decent size from saplings to 40 inches DBH at max. Thanks for your information. I may have underestimated the numbers we have. I did a basic look over and trees over 12" are much more than I thought. (around 120,000 in that 12" class) Before the Adelgid I have never paid m...

Re: Hemlocks and Adelgids

That is great Will, My issues are the hemlock estimate I stated is several hundred thousand hemlock across 37,000 acres. I simplified it to what the maximum concentration would be. ie I boiled it down that we have ~500 acres of hemlock spread across 37,000 acres of woods. We have treated many, but i...

Hemlocks and Adelgids

Sorry, I know you guys may have discussed this? Have any of you guys been treating large stands? (300-700+ acres) I have treated around 600 hundred Hemlocks in the last year. I have been working with the University of Tennessee on trying to set up research but that is slow compared to the bugs eatin...

Hemlock Aldelgid, Treatments!

I am hoping to save a few groves of Eastern Hemlock in Morgan County TN. The bug just showed up, what is the best attack??? I have around 1000 acres of hemlock, and plan on trying to save 2-3 groves. Nothing is huge but I do have several 30+ inch diameter trees. Mostly I have watersheds with hemlock...

Re: Paper birch on Mount Mitchell- Native???

Will,

I read an old Smokies manuscript by Arthur Stupka 1930's, that mentioned finding a gray/paper birch in the Smokies. Other than that I haven't heard of paper birch being recorded in the area. Awesome and great find! Thats is my two cents. I vote native and vestigial!

Re: Cumberland Yellow Birch

Thanks Will, Interesting! We have loads of Sweet Birch (Black Birch), but Yellow Birch is not an everyday find in my area. By South Cumberlands what area is that? We are in Morgan County and a bit in Scott County Tennessee. I have only found these guys at 2500-3000 feet on north facing aspects on my...

Cumberland Yellow Birch

I just found a few Yellow Birch on a mountain we have managed for 4 generations. My father and grandfather have talked about finding some on other nearby tracts but this is the first for this tract. Always fun to find new species on your place! I have seen Yellow Birch at a few Cumberland locations ...

Re: Potential National Champion Mountain camellia, TN

Do you mean diameter of 9.3 diameter or "girth". Damn if you got a 9 inch diameter Camelia! Congrats if you do, I am hanging my hat from my timber!
