Re: Lake Superior Provincial Park

Accipiter, Thanks for sharing the photos. Those White Pines certainly look old (in a beautiful setting, as well). I haven’t been that far north in Ontario, but I have in Quebec and New Brunswick. I’ve always wanted to repeat that drive from Quebec City to Chicoutimi on my own time instead of for wor...

Re: New Record Tallest Sycamore

Brian,

Congrats on the Sycamore. I hope your friend enjoyed the experience; it can’t hurt to be part of finding a record tree like that the first time out.

Re: Irondequoit Bay Parks

NTS, I've compiled an updated list of the largest and tallest trees (by species) in the Irondequoit Bay parks. The spreadsheet is titled "MaxList" as a tribute to Jess Riddle's past work and is attached below in Excel format. The current Rucker 10 Height Index stands at 142.6.' The Rucker 10 Girth (...

Re: Stateline Woods Preserve, off of Old Kennett Pike

Here is another tree that I found that I am unsure on the Species. It is located on the same little "Island" between the 2 creeks, right next to the tulip, and near the other old, unknown tree. Maybe it is a very old type of oak, as the bark is in very, very deep ridges, and shows some balding, alt...

Re: Stateline Woods Preserve, off of Old Kennett Pike

Bee, It’s good to hear that you’re out there making reliable measurements. I remember using the “stick” method of height measurement (promoted at the time by American Forests) on the Norway Spruces and Red Pines in our yard when I was a teenager. I didn’t buy a laser until my late twenties, and it w...

Lakeview Cemetery, Brockport

NTS, Earlier today I surveyed this property in Monroe County, NY, just west of Rochester. The cemetery, also sometimes referred to as "Beach Ridge," dates from 1828, though every tree I measured is likely no older than 1891, when Lakeview was officially organized. Here is a link to a little bit of t...

Re: Palmer Woods, Cayuga Heights, NY

NTS, In January 2021 I revisited Palmer Woods with the aim of updating the measurements Tom Howard and I made in 2015. I also found a bunch of new trees, some of which helped to boost the site’s Rucker Height Index. Here’s what I measured: Red Maple Acer rubrum 110.2’ x 6.47’ Black Birch Betula lent...

Re: Daily digests

Kouta, Shorea, NTS,

I stopped getting Daily Digests last month (January 2021), so you can add me to the list. I didn't change any of the settings in my account profile. I have no idea what the problem is, but for now I'll keep an eye out and see if the emails resume at some point.
