Request for advice

I'm George from Cary, NC, a new member. The reason I joined is to ask for advice and guidance on setting up a Big Trees Register for my town. I have website assistance for anything that the project requires. I intend to have listings for the biggest trees, and also listings for trees that are nomina...

Re: George in Cary, NC

Don, I don't want to expend energy on this sort of off-topic discussion, especially with a man with obvious and extensive expertise whom I intend to ask for advice in starting a Champion Tree Register in my city. I don't want to argue with you about whether volcano mulching is endemic in North Carol...

Meaning of "Native"

I'm a new member, and after joining recently, it occurred to me that I didn't know what the word 'native' meant in the name of the group.

Any help appreciated!

Don:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:

http://www.cityofanchorage.org/documents/nljuly2015.pdf

The article calls volcano mulching "the latest technique" in Anchorage. Thank goodness it warns against.

Re: George in Cary, NC

Tom, Great rant! It's better than holding your tongue and resignedly accepting the inanity of our species. I agree with all you say. I think I'll go out and plant a Giant Sequoia today so that, in a thousand years, the descendants of the founders of this list can thank some nameless 21st-century per...

Re: George in Cary, NC

Don!

Your optimism is boundless! Google "volcano mulching" and you will find thousands of articles condemning the practice. The articles are necessary because, unfortunately, the practice is ubiquitous, and spreading rapidly. It is seen everywhere in North Carolina communities.

Re: George in Cary, NC

Those trees are dying already. The bark will rot off their trunks, then the rot will spread to the lower branches. The leaf production will be later in spring, fewer leaves will grow; they will not turn as pretty colors in the fall, and they will fall off sooner than they should. In four or six year...

Re: George in Cary, NC

Hi Joe, Volcano mulching is the process of piling mulch up around the trunk of a tree, sometimes to absurd heights of three or four feet. For a tree to thrive, it must have its root flare uncovered. If not, moisture retained in the piled-up mulch spurs rodent, insect, bacteria, and fungi growth, all...

George in Cary, NC

Hi, I'm George McDowell, proud new member. Retired lawyer and military helicopter pilot. My town has a huge number of volcano-mulched trees. This drives me batty. Rather than simply ignoring the craziness, I thought I'd try to do something about it. Our publicly and commercially maintained trees sho...
