Re: The Beauty of Big Basin

I also forgot to mention another interesting tree in Big Basin. There are two very tall redwoods in the park that lean on each other. Even a very light wind causes one to rub slowly against the other. It is in an unpopular part of the park, so when the rubbing happens, it causes an eerie groaning an...

Re: The Beauty of Big Basin

Thanks for posting these pictures, they are nice. I take my wife and kids camping in Big Basin every summer. The drought has definitely stressed the trees there. When my kids get a little older, I want to take them on a multi-day hike on the skyline to the sea trail. It is a 30 mile trail from the h...

Re: Blue Gum Superlatives, invasive yet impressive

Eucalyptus trees should be banned from California and the existing trees in California should be removed otherwise they will eventually crowd out the native trees.

Re: Henry Cowell Redwoods field report

I live about 45 minutes from Henry Cowell, and regularly visit. For the southern redwood parks Henry and Big Basin are my favorites. Big Basin is very big and extends all of the way to the beach. It has the tallest tree south of San Francisco, and some nice waterfalls, and the tent cabins are fun fo...

Redwood leaf stomata

All redwood leaves have stomata on the underside, but I noticed that many trees in Jedidiah park have many visible stomata on the upperside of the leaf. I checked many trees in Big Basin and was not able to find a single tree with stomata on the top side of the leaf. Have the southern trees adapted ...

Re: Redwood cutting has albino sprout

The sprout has started to grow rapidly, but has also started to turn green. This change occurred after I decreased the frequency of watering and also fertilized the tree with an organic fertilizer composed of seaweed extract and fish meal. Maybe the tree had an iron deficiency due to overwatering? O...

Re: Redwood cutting has albino sprout

Here is a picture I took tonight. The sprout has a very faint green tint on the lowest leaves, but is otherwise white:

Coast Redwood trees dropping green cones in July

I visited Redwood National Park this month (in a failed attempt to find Hyperion), and I also visited Big Basin. I noticed that most of the redwood trees in Big Basin are dropping many of their cones this month, while they are still green and unopened. Is this normal, or is it due to the extreme dro...

Re: Redwood cutting has albino sprout

What's the update with this albino redwood sprout. I don't know if you've heard but a large albino chimeric redwood has been saved from the ax in Cotati, CA. It's been featured on National Geographic's website and NPR's "All Things Considered." I will post a new picture later this week. I...
